Brush Those Haters Off - Kathy Caprino
Brush Those Haters Off Hello! Hows your week going? Great, I hope. Personally, Ive had a few hard knocks this week from several people who indicated theyd like to offer constructive feedback, but then proceeded to tear down and put down. Helpful or Hurtful? Its an interesting experience, to come open-hearted to someone to receive their feedback, thinking it will be a growing experience to hear their thoughts, only to discover that the input is not coming from a kind, compassionate or caring place, or being offered as a means of help. Know what I mean? Have you experienced that lately too? As a trained therapist, communicator and energy worker, I feel energy. I feel a vast energetic difference between words that come from someone who has clear vision, whos done the inner work, and who is offering feedback from a caring, service-oriented place, versus input from one who hasnt done the hard work of examining herself and understanding her own fears, vulnerabilities or dark side. Sure, there are times when we hear critical input and it hurts, but we know deep down that its well-intended and important to take in. But in the cases where the giver is not intending to be helpful, (and is just lashing out instead), we should NOT take it in. Its vitally important to be able to differentiate. After all, (as my new friend just shared), You dont have to catch every ball thats thrown at you. As hard as it is to be torn down, Im using it as fodder for growth. Im taking the time to settle into it and feel what its teaching me. Im looking at how I co-created the space for it. Im also continuing to build stronger boundaries, and remembering that not everyone is going to like us! As You Spread Your Wings, You Bump into More Things Ive heard, and now believe, that the clearer we get about who we are and what were doing here, the more powerful and purposeful we are on that path, the more people will find us off-putting or threatening (and unlikable)! Ive heard it said that if youre not offending anyone, youre not taking a strong enough stand! Intriguing concept, and Im seeing a good deal of validity in it. As Ive been experiencing some challenging feedback that didnt feel as if it were coming from a pure place, perhaps you have too? I hope not, but if so, please remember this: Youre awesome, and youre working very diligently to come from a place of service and to help many, from your heart. You are special, and its time to stop shying away from your specialness. You have the right to share your uniqueness in a powerful way with others. And if others bristle or lash out, dont dishonor yourself by beating yourself up that youve done something wrong. Treat yourself with love and compassion (and find compassion in your heart for the hater). But also find the courage (and take the time) to learn the important lessons you need to experience, all along the way. Brush Those Haters Off! If someone tears you down with cruelty or out of spite or jealously, brush the hater off and pick yourself up! Dont be dragged down. Certainly, find compassion and understanding in your heart, but remember that only you can understand and recognize your true path. Keep true to yourself, and dont let the detractors knock you down. (Deep thanks go to my amazing virtual assistant Yoana Brecker, of Advantage Virtual Support for that sound and caring piece of advice!) Have you been put down lately out of the blue? What did it teach you? Please SHARE.

Why Do Celebrities Have LinkedIn Profiles
Why Do Celebrities Have LinkedIn Profiles Stars â" theyâre just like us. They eat cheeseburgers, they pay parking meters, and some of them are even on LinkedIn. Thatâs right. Along with your annoying former classmates, ex-boyfriends and dad, people like Martha Stewart and Barack Obama are on LinkedIn. And, as someone who spends a not-insignificant amount of time on the social networking site, I want to know why. Iâve recently become obsessed with famous peopleâs profiles. I donât know about you, but I use LinkedIn for job-related activities like sharing my articles, looking for sources, obsessing over whether my profile picture looks professional enough and sending my friends stupid auto-generated InMail messages. Thereâs no way Obama is doing any of that. So what is he doing? Is he, like me, dodging connection requests from PR people? Is it a gag? Part of a sponsorship thing? I set out to uncover what the deal is with celebrity LinkedIns. Hereâs what I found. Can everyone stopped inviting me to 'LinkedIn' please? I dont want to be Linked in. Join my new website 'LeftOut'. Wanna be 'LeftOut'? I do. â" RainnWilson (@rainnwilson) May 31, 2011 Celebrity LinkedIn Profiles Are Awesome If youâre ever bored at work, I highly recommend going down the celebrity LinkedIn rabbit hole. All you have to do is type a starâs name into the search bar, go to his or her page and start reading. When youâre done, head to the âPeople Also Viewedâ sidebar on the right, choose another famous name, and click. Repeat until your shift is over. Sure, some of the profiles are fake, but others seem pretty darn real. Regardless of authenticity, profiles purportedly belonging to famous people are chock-full of gems, like the fact rapper Gucci Mane lists knowing English under his accomplishments. New England Patriots player Julian Edelman mentions how much he likes burgers in his bio. Singer Ariana Grande puts Microsoft Office as a skill. The deeper you dig, the better it gets. One of Jessica Albaâs interests is Target (which, yeah, same). TV host Steve Harvey wrote that he attended the âSchool of Life.â Lil Wayne, or some enterprising individual with the URL www.linkedin.com/in/lilwayne, says his job since 1982 is âGreatest Rapper Alive.â What are the duties that come with that? Oh, you know â" âgetting that paper,â âlaying down phat beatsâ and âsippinâ.â The endorsements section is particularly juicy. Apparently President Donald Trumpâs former lawyer Michael Cohen once felt the need to endorse Donald Trump, Jr. for âReal Estateâ? Nearly 90 people have endorsed Rick Ross for PowerPoint. And, my personal favorite: Five LinkedIn users have stepped up to endorse former basketball player Shaquille OâNeal for âbasketry.â Every time I get a message from LinkedIn, it feels like my mom is trying to set up a playdate with the wrong kid. â" Jordan Peele (@JordanPeele) June 12, 2013 Some Stars Are Actually on LinkedIn According to Dan Roth, the editor-in-chief of LinkedIn, many profiles in celebritiesâ names are legit. In some cases, LinkedIn has reached out to them to officially establish a partnership, but in others, the stars simply decided they wanted to sign up. âWe all have to carve out our own career paths now; that is as true for celebrities as it is for anyone else,â he says. âSmart celebrities realize they have to be thinking about what their next play is.â LinkedIn can help celebrities showcase their interests, just like it does for normal people, Roth says. If you were interested in getting a job in a new field, for example, youâd probably start connecting with people who worked in that industry, commenting on relevant news stories and following professional organizations. The same can go for a celebrity looking for new opportunities â" for example, an athlete making plans in case of injury, or a philanthropist looking for a new cause. LinkedIn also runs an influencer program. There are about 500 participants right now; you can identify them by the blue or gold âinâ badge on their profiles. That badge indicates that theyâre active, because LinkedIn will take it away if they donât post often enough. For example, Karlie Kloss, who posted an article in May 2018, has one. Gwen Stefani, whose last link share was in 2016, does not. âWeâre doing it because we believe that these people have something really powerful to give back,â Roth says. âIf theyâre no longer giving back ⦠then the badge shouldnât be there.â Roth says he likes to focus on posts, not profiles, because they contain valuable insight from the experts. These pull-back-the-curtain sort of updates âare incredible ways for celebrities to show that what theyâre doing is real life,â says Roth, who hosts a video interview series that highlights influencers like Jennifer Lopez. Itâs also good for their own brand, given that LinkedIn has 610 million members around the world. Celebrities canât pass up that audience or chance for engagement. For example, Mark Cuban and Richard Branson both regularly share, like and comment on posts. They also canât ignore the one other major benefit of the site: âThe comments tend to be respectful because people are in the business mindset when theyâre here,â Roth says. âThereâs no flaming, very little trolling on LinkedIn.â Adding a bunch of contacts on linkedin from gmail. Perhaps you're one of my victims. â" iJustine (@ijustine) October 28, 2008 But Imposters Abound This is pretty obviously not Tiger Woods, unless he has changed his entire face since the last time I saw him. Itâs doubtful this is Anne Hathaway, given that she lists her job as SEO executive and not Princess of Genovia. And as much as I want to believe this profile is actually Beyoncé, I feel like she probably wouldnât describe herself as âmost awarded human alive.â LinkedIn is littered with fake celebrity accounts, as Digiday pointed out in April. LinkedIn wrote in 2018 that the company uses âutilize a variety of automated techniques, coupled with human reviewers and member reporting, to keep our members safe from all types of bad actors and abuse,â but thereâs clearly still work to do. (Side note: Want to know how to recognize a fake LinkedIn profile? If thereâs no photo, bad grammar or suspicious info, you should probably tread carefully.) In my research, though, I also uncovered another kind of poser. Everyone from R.L. Stine to Chrissy Teigen has tweeted about LinkedInâs overzealous email system, but few appear to truly have profiles on the site. Case in point: Actor Zach Braff tweeted in 2012 about how much he hates Linkedin invitations, but nobody even pretending to be him comes up in my search results. Of course, he and Stine and Teigen could have deleted their profiles (or they could exist in a secret part of the site). But my conclusion is that while some stars see LinkedIn as serious business, others just think itâs a punchline. Iâm so sorry, I just saw that everyone I know is awaiting my LinkedIn reply. â" Jesse Tyler Ferguson (@jessetyler) February 8, 2018 They Donât Want to Talk (to Me) About It As far as real LinkedIn users go, getting celebrities to discuss LinkedIn proved difficult. I guess theyâre busy or something? Oprah Winfrey declined to comment, but at least her people emailed me back. (Dozens of other publicists did not. Perhaps I should have InMailed them.) Goop queen Gwyneth Paltrowâs spokeswoman told me Paltrow herself couldnât talk but she â" the spokeswoman â" could answer questions. So I learned that Paltrow does personally log in and post on her LinkedIn, though she only uses it âsparingly.â When asked whether Paltrow sees LinkedIn as an important social network, the spokeswoman said âyes,â adding that âwe have a strong presence on LinkedIn for goop.â Huh! The most interesting response was from Diploâs publicist, who said his profile was âprimarily tongue-in-cheek.â Makes sense, because the DJ lists himself as having been the âadmiralâ at his record label Mad Decent for the past 118 years and 5 months. They may not have commented to MONEY, but certain celebrities have spoken about LinkedIn before. In 2013, talk show host Conan OâBrien decided he wanted to become the siteâs most-followed user, declaring that âI will not rest until I become the number one personality, or âInfluencer,â as you call it, on the site.â No word on whether he achieved that lofty goal. And You Can Try to Connect, But⦠OK, hereâs what you really want to know: Can you connect with a celebrity on LinkedIn? The answer is that you can try. For most people, like baseball player Alex Rodriguez, you can just click âConnectâ and itâll let you do so â" albeit with a recommendation that you pen a note to âremind people who you are and explain why you want to connect.â But for some, like Whitney Port, you have to enter their email address to verify that you actually know them. However, as part of this investigation, I ignored most of that and randomly started trying to connect with celebrities. I sent requests to B.J. Novak, Misha Collins, Issa Rae, Jeb Bush, Martha Stewart, Amy Schumer and Sarah Michelle Gellar. None have accepted yet, but Iâll keep you posted. Check my LinkedIn page for updates.

What I Learned From Moving Back In With My Parents For My Career
What I Learned From Moving Back In With My Parents For My Career According to an analysis of 2016 U.S. Census data by the Pew Research Center, more young adults are living at home for longer periods time. The data reported that 15 percent of millennials between the ages of 25 and 35 were living at home with their parents additional research shows that among young adults who had moved back in with their parents, the median length of their stay was three years. Overall, the number of millennials living at home, or moving back in with their parents has increased from previous generations. In comparison, only 10 percent of Generation X-ers between the ages of 25 and 35 lived with their parents in 2000.It would be too easy to write off the trend of millennials living back at home as a side-effect of thelazy millennial myth, but in reality, more millennials are forgoing traditional adult milestones like buying a home or starting a family all in the name of pursuing advanced degrees and cha sing job opportunities, in an economy with exorbitant housing prices and stagnant wages. At this very moment, Im one of those on-trend millennials. After I was terminated from a full-time job with benefits last fall, I bounced back-and-forth between unemployment and underemployment for almost six months. A string of freelance gigs, temp jobs, and help from family kept me from homelessness. But it has recently made more financial sense to move back in with a parent. Here are five things Ive learned1. Having an exit strategy is essential.Ive experienced the freedom of living alone, in my own place for almost a year. To say that I was unhappy about moving back to my parents home, would be an understatement. But the promise of being able to live on my own again, is ample motivation to have an exit strategy which includes a written plan with the specific date that I intend to move out, how much money I need to save, and how much debt stands in my way. An exit strategy can also include eme rgency resources in case living at home stops feeling like a healthy choice.2. Its necessary to have a conversation about expectations.Does my mom love me? Yes. Am I allowed to run amuck while living at home? No. Before I moved back, I knew that it was necessary to have a conversation about my contributions to the household. As a creative freelancer, a wifi connection is my bread and butter, so mooching off of my moms internet didnt seem right. I made aya to ask what is expected of me during my stay, so that I can maintain both my independence and my sanity.3. You will have to do what you dont want to do, in order to get where you want to be.I havent worked at a full-time job for more than a year, since graduating from college three years ago. Im finally at a point, where Im building up work as a writer. But when I moved home, I had to be honest about my poor financial habits and the fact that part-time writing cant sustain me. As a result, Ive had to consider things like working a less-than desirable customer service job, in order to help me reach my goals.4. Parents are people too.I think that it is easy to forget that our parents are only human. They have lived a lot more life than we have, and they are susceptible to the saatkorn successes and failures as us. While I live at home, I want to make intentional time to reconnect with my mom, and take advantage of the fact that we can now have conversations that are more open and more understanding now that Im an adult.5. Its not the end of the world.I do miss the ability to sit on my own couch sans pants with a glass of wine. But living at home with your parents isnt the end of the world. It often beats the alternative, and provides the time and motivation to reset your priorities. I had a semi-permanent frown on my face my first few nights back home, but have started to make peace with my reality. It helps that I dont have to panic about being able to pay rent and utilities for the next year.
