A New Career at 60 Why its Never Too Late To Dream Big
A New Career at 60 Why its Never Too Late To Dream Big A New Career at 60? Why its Never Too Late To Dream BigPosted May 5, 2016, by Jordan HuidekoperAs a former primary school teacher, Beverley has always loved working with children. For her, kindergarteners and first graders were always the most gratifying to teach.Prep and Grade one and two were beautiful to work with. It was very rewarding, says Beverley. When the time came to retire, Beverley realised that she didnt want to be just another retiree and this was her opportunity to redefine what retirement means. So at 61, the grandmother of eight isnt touring around Australia in a caravan or relocating to a small beachside town instead shes hitting the booksBeverley joins a growing cohort of baby boomers who are staying in the workforce longer and using their twilight years to pursue work thats meaningful, fulfilling, and helping to grow that all-important horst egg.herbei passion for nurturing young inquisitive minds fuelled Bever leys desire to take a side step from teaching into the growing childcare sector. With the recent legislative changes to the childcare industry, Beverly knew she had to go back and get qualified as an accredited childcare worker, so she enrolled at a university full-time.But with eight grandchildren running around, she quickly realised that traditional full-time study just wasnt going to work. I struggled...it was a lot of hard work because I still had to run the kids around, says Beverley. I was burning the candle at both ends.Determined to make her dreams a reality despite the odds, she decided to try a vocational childcare course with Online Courses Australia, and hasnt looked back since. Beverley says she absolutely loves the flexibility an online course affords her, and how easy it is to switch back and forth between minding the grandkids and working through her studies. Its the way to go because I can work here at home. I can work at the office. If the grandkids are here I can s it outside on the deck and do my course there.Having studied on campus when her own children were teens, Beverley says that studying with young children is even harder. ASME ECLIPSE Intern Goes to Washington
ASME ECLIPSE Intern Goes to Washington ASME ECLIPSE Intern Goes to Washington ASME ECLIPSE Intern Goes to WashingtonBy Kushi Sellahennedige, 2017-2018 ECLIPSE InternThis year, I welches selected as an Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) intern after being a proud ASME member for eight years. The ECLIPSE program is for early career engineers to participate in the growth of ASME by participating in highly visible leadership and volunteer roles. During our orientation which was held in Washington DC, we met with our fellow interns (current and future) and prepared for our upcoming congressional visits (associated with the Symposium event mentioned below) to have a seat at the table with policy decision makers. This year, the congressional visits had a great deal of impact on me (as a fellow engineer and ECLIPSE intern) since President Trump had just recently proposed his skinny budget. His proposal consisted of cutting research funding at the National S cience Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Department of Energys (DOE) Office of Science, all of which have a strong impact on the future of science and engineering.Kushi Sellahennedige with Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)Before going on my congressional visits, I participated in the 14th annual Multisociety Engineering Public Policy Symposium, which was a great eye opener for me. Attendees came from various backgrounds from 44 engineering societies, all with the shared goal of supporting and maintaining the future of engineering and science. The bipartisan speakers told us stories about the impact of science and engineering on their lives and how both areas are important for maintaining the growth of the country and future generation. Attendees expressed concerned about the budget cuts and the impact that they might have on U.S. competitiveness. I was motivated by their passionate speeches before I headed to my congressional visits that afternoon.During my congressional visits, I was accompanied by fellow ASME members and met with the staff representatives for Senator Edward Markey (D-MA), Representative Niki Tsongas (D-MA), and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). During my meet and greet with Senator Warren, I spoke briefly with zu sich about the value of engineering where she shared a story from her personal life that exemplified the reason engineering is such an important field for the future generation. Our goal was to communicate the importance of federal research funding in engineering and manufacturing as a bipartisan issue, and to maintain our U.S. competitiveness globally. We specifically mentioned Manufacturing USA, which is the national network of manufacturing innovation Institutes. Manufacturing USA leverages the strengths of a particular region and coalesces companies, universities, community colleges, and the government to co-invest in developing world-leading manufacturing technologies. I spoke from my perspective as an early career engineer, while my colleagues gave an industry perspective related to corporations working with the community to train the local workforce. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience for me. It never crossed my mind that one day, I would have the opportunity to directly go to Capitol Hill and interact with Members and their staff, represent ASME and fellow engineers in the process. However, Congressional visits are just a first step in influencing the policy making process it is important to stay engaged and develop an ongoing relationship with your Members of Congress by going to their town hall meetings, inviting them to your companies or academic institutions to learn about current events and tasks and being an advocate for engineering education through ongoing communications with their offices. I look forward to my continued interactions with ASME Government Relations and my Congressional representatives as I continue this journey as an ECLIPSE intern. For mora information about the Trump Administrations skinny budget mentioned above, go to https//www.whitehouse.gov/sites/whitehouse.gov/files/omb/budget/fy2018/2018_blueprint.pdfOn May 23, the full FY18 budget request was released. The federal science and engineering agencies also have links to their budgets on their respective web sites, i.e.For the latest engineering public policy news, check the ASME Public Policy Education Center (ppec.asme.org) regularly, and subscribe to ASME Capitol Update, the weekly policy newsletter for ASME members. To identify your own Members of Congress, go to http//capwiz.com/asme/dbq/officials/Any questions related to ASME Government Relations can be sent to grdeptasme.orgThe event is made possible by a grant from the United Engineering Foundation and the support of ASME and lead sponsors AIChE, AIME, ASCE, and IEEE-USA.

Should you ever keep your bosss secrets A lawyer weighs in
Should you ever keep your bosss secrets A lawyer weighs inShould you ever keep your bosss secrets A lawyer weighs inWhat do you do when someone you work for asks you to keep their secret? Attorney David C. Miller, Esq., from the firm of Bryant Miller Olive is a board-certified in Labor and Employment Law by The Florida Bar.Miller answered some tricky questions about keeping the secrets of others in the workplace.Use good judgmentWe all want others to feel they can trust us, said Miller and One part of earning trust is keeping others confidences. This is as true at work as it is in life generally. The thing is though, if were going to be trustworthy, we have to have the good judgment to know when something should be kept secret and when it is harmful or wrong to do so.There are gradations to secrets you can or should keep. Miller said Its obvious that we should respect someones personal secrets fruchtwein of the time. If your work friend confides that hes worried about his childs trou bling behavior at home, most of the time its nobody elses business and it likely would hurt your friends feelings if you gossiped about it.On the other pranke, if a coworker tells you that she thinks shes being sexually harassed but asks you not to tell you may be doing her and others a disservice by not properly reporting it.When is a secret a secret? As a general proposition, merely being told someones secret doesnt by itself impose a duty of confidentiality. However, there are lots of situations where information is legally confidential, Miller said. A companys legally defined trade secrets cant be divulged. Some state laws make the names of victims of certain crimes confidential. Often the home addresses of public safety employees and others are confidential. Medical information is often protected from disclosure. In those cases, and others information is confidential and disclosing it can be improper. When in doubt Seek guidance from an appropriate person.More serious situation sIf someone confesses wrongdoing or says that hes planning something wrong, you should usually disclose it if you cant talk him into confessing or not going through with it, Miller said. As with most things, theres a spectrum. If you catch a coworking stealing a few pens from the storage cabinet, Miller said you might just express disapproval and not say anything the first time. But if you find the security guard asleep at her post, you probably need to report it.An absolute rule? Never agree to keep a secret that could harm someone or put you in a position of being (or even seeming) dishonest.Use your reputationIts easy to say you never have to keep a secret, but it can be very hard in practice, Miller said, You can feel tremendous pressure to keep secrets not to be a rat. This is where your reputation for integrity and honesty and trustworthiness go hand in hand and protect you.If youve made it clear through your actions over time that you will do the right thing, people will tre at you accordingly. What happens if you change your mind?If you accept a secret and then, after consideration, decide you shouldnt have, Miller said you really need to follow your best judgment. It wont hurt your integrity not to keep wrongful information secret, even if you rashly promised to do so. But dont randomly start to spill the beans. If at all possible, you can try to tell the person first and explain why its wrong to keep the secret, Miller advised. And you never know You could be pleasantly surprised, and he will decide to disclose it himself. Even if he doesnt, you will have done everything you could to do the right thing. What if it blows up in some way?Are you legally culpable if you know a tiny bit of someones secret that turns out to be damaging in some way to the firm or an individual? Miller said it depends on the circumstances. What did you know? How much? When did you know it? How clear or unclear was your knowledge? Again, when in doubt, get guidance from someone y ou trust. Miller said, Itd tempting to declare Im always totally transparent, or I never betray anyones secrets. But absolutes, as good as they may sound, dont work in the real world.Be thoughtful. Be careful. Be honest. Be all that and, pretty soon, youll be the person everyone trusts.

Its Time For Your Annual Salary Checkup
Itâs Time For Your Annual Salary Checkup Itâs Time For Your Annual Salary Checkup The Top 10 Most Underpaid Jobs in America You have an annual checkup to maintain your physical health, so why not do the same for your financial health? From year to year, you gain more experience and new skills , and you may even change jobs or locations. Given all of this, your potential earnings can increase greatly - and you might not even know it. For a year now, Glassdoorâs Know Your Worth⢠personalized salary estimator has been helping people regularly check up and check in on their market worth. And if you havenât yet tried it, itâs high time you do so. But donât just take our word for it. We spoke with Glassdoor user Jasmine from North Carolina, one of the many people who has used Know Your Worth to find out what she deserves to earn. From that conversation, we came away with a few key reasons why everyone should try Know Your Worth. 1. Know Your Worth Estimates Are Customized Just for You You might be able to find a blanket salary estimate for your job title out there, but if itâs not tailored to your company, experience and location, is it really providing you with an accurate picture? Probably not. An estimate from Know Your Worth, on the other hand, takes all of those factors into account. âKnow Your Worth is probably my favorite tool because it not only takes into account your skill set and years of experience - it also asks for your location. Some people forget that $70,000 in North Carolina is probably worth about $40,000 in D.C.â With an estimate thatâs customized based on your specific circumstances, you can feel confident that itâs right for you. If youâve been out of the job market for a while, it can be tough to figure out what salary you should aim for , especially when there are so many different positions out there, each one offering a different paycheck. And if you donât know what salary range to target, you could spend a whole lot of time applying to companies that arenât the right fit, or even worse, end up being significantly underpaid. But with a custom salary estimate from Know Your Worth, youâll have a much better idea of which positions and companies to target. âI have some very talented colleagues and friends that are looking to change careers or looking for other opportunities, and theyâre not sure what to ask for, so Iâve been recommending Know Your Worth. Theyâve come back and said, âIâm so glad you did that. I didnât realize I was being $25-35,000 underpaid,'â Jasmine said. Know Your Worth isnât just for helping you figure out a target salary range - it can also be used as a concrete reference point in negotiations , whether itâs for a raise , job offer or promotion. âIâve been able to look at Know Your Worth and see a baseline of where to start for salary requirements⦠I have a better idea of what my skill sets are worth instead of blindly asking for a number.â And once you have that estimate, youâll feel a lot more secure at the negotiation table. âI have more confidence when I say a number or give a range or negotiate for my salary,â Jasmine said. Each year, many recruiters and HR professionals spend tens of thousands of dollars to access reports that shed light on what employees around the country are earning. But Know Your Worth is completely free. âI have friends that are recruiters and theyâre privy to certain pay reports that we as consumers are not - a typical job seeker is not going to be able to pay an astronomical amount of money just to pull those reports,â Jasmine shared. But with a grand total of $0 and a few minutes out of your day, Know Your Worth can help you access that valuable information with no strings attached. No matter where youâre at in your career, everyone deserves to understand what the market value of their skills is. Not only can it help you when it comes to the job search and negotiating - the simple fact of understanding your worth is, in itself, empowering. âOnce you know your worth, it provides a peace of mind,â Jasmine said.

Why You Must Post a Photo on LinkedIn (and Which One to Choose)
Why You Must Post a Photo on LinkedIn (and Which One to Choose) Why You Must Post a Photo on LinkedIn (and Which One to Choose) Many people resist including their photo on LinkedIn and there are legitimate concerns about this. Perhaps you worry about discrimination. Perhaps you donât like the photos you have available. But the truth is that your LinkedIn photo is vital. Profiles without photos are far less effective than those that include one. Thereâs something about seeing that faceless icon in a long strong of search results that makes it much more unlikely a recruiter will click on your profile to read more. Not having a LinkedIn photo also makes it less likely that people will accept your requests to connect and this is a key benefit of using LinkedIn. Adding a photo to LinkedIn is easy, but the question is what type of photo should you use? First, I recommend having some pictures taken professionally if you can afford it. If not, have a friend or family member take your picture but choose professional clothing and a neutral setting. The photo should be a head shot for the simple reason that LinkedIn photos are very small. If you use a full body shot, no one will be able to see your face and this is almost as bad as not having a picture at all. The picture must be well-lit and in focus. My preferred look for a LinkedIn photo is business casual, by which I mean, look smart but approachable. Donât choose one of those very traditional corporate headshots because it can make you look unapproachable. If possible, you should be smiling in your shot as this makes people much more likely to connect with you. Your photo should be as close to a square as possible. This is because once you upload it to LinkedIn, the site will force you to crop the photo to a square shape and if the original picture is an oblong, you may find that parts of your face are cut off. In short, your LinkedIn photo should make the same impression on people as if you were greeting them personally. Make it friendly, warm, approachable, and professional. Good luck!

How to Hire and Train Agile Software Developers
How to Hire and Train Agile Software Developers How to Hire and Train Agile Software Developers How to Hire and Train Agile Software Developers Rossheim Agile software development has been around for many years. Yet thousands of organizations large and small lack the right mix of skills on hand to effect a transformation to agile. What are those companies missing out on? Agile software development breaks out larger-scale software development into modular stages with incremental deliverables. Thus it enables organizations to succeed with projects by avoiding unnecessary complexity and constant change orders. The result can help accelerate go-to-market cycles and create competitive advantage. A key prerequisite to such a transformation is recruiting or training IT talent thats a fit for the agile mindset. Yet good developers who are well-versed in agile can be difficult to identify and even harder to attract. To successfully recruit them, You have to demonstrate your commitment to agile conversion, says Dave West, CEO of Scrum.org, a training and certification provider. Here are some key insights from industry insiders on how to hire technology talent and train them workers who will be key to your organizations transformation to agile. Hire techies for soft skills. For developers working in an agile environment, soft skills are essential to success. We dont have a lot of developers who are more comfortable talking to computers than to people, says Wenhold, says Timothy Wenhold, CIO of Power Home Remodeling. Screen for agile temperament. Its not easy to predict which candidates will be open to the waves of change that theyll experience working in an agile framework, but its critically important. So screen out personality types who lack a strong record of adapting to change and are motivated primarily by the desire to avoid difficulties, says Patric Palm, CEO of agile tools makers Hansoft and Favro. Seek out candidates who are customer-oriented. Does it come naturally to a candidate to talk about meeting customer needs, not just solving technical problems? Thats especially important in an agile shop. Look for people with a passion for product rather than technology, says Palm. Screening for technical ability is still important. Assess technical competence early in the recruitment process. Require candidates to take open assessments that are free and accessible, says West. If they dont want to take assessments, theyre probably not right for scrum. Luckily, testing candidates coding and software-design chops isnt as difficult as it once was. We use Hacker Rank and Ruby on Rails tests, says Wenhold. But technical ability counts for only about 20 percent technical. The rest is people skills. Invest time with finalists. Try to bring in the top contenders for at least half a day in your office. You have to spend more than an hour with people, says West. I know a company that gets candidates together, gives them an exercise and observes how they work and interact. Ask references specifically about the candidates agile performance. When you speak with candidates references, get granular about their performance in an agile environment. Get references and talk to people about how the candidate worked, how they dealt with typical scrum challenges like planning, conflict and surprises, says West. Apply agile hiring criteria to more than just developers. Agile change initiatives go wrong by putting the whole thing behind the curtain of software development, says West. It isnt just the software development team, its about testing, operations, the whole delivery chain. It involves a lot of people who ultimately are not directly on scrum teams. Familiarize HR and recruiters with the world of agile. Your HR managers and recruiters will have much better intuitions for what qualifies a candidate for agile if they see the method in action. Our recruiters come to some of our scrum meetings, says Wenhold. Dedicate training time to agile. Dont expect IT people to learn agile purely by osmosis. As part of onboarding new hires, for the first week we have them read a book on the scrum process and learn how our departments are set up, says Wenhold. For their second week, they shadow a scrum team and become a team member. Were teaching them how the agile framework works. Use the scrum framework to train developers on agile. Look for an agile training program thats structured according to an agile framework. You get the whole training in a safe and complete way in 5 or 6 sprints, says West. You encounter questions like, What does done mean? in relation to a specific project goal. Provide support for continuous learning about agile. Especially in the early stages of a transformation to an agile framework, key aspects of this way of working can be distorted by office politics, organizational culture, or mission drift. That makes employee training crucial. So hire or designate an internal agile coach, or an external coach who comes in for long-term gig, to keep your shop on track, Palm advises.

Three Pre-College Teachers Honored with DiscoverE Educator Awards
Three Pre-College Teachers Honored with DiscoverE Educator Awards Three Pre-College Teachers Honored with DiscoverE Educator Awards Three Pre-College Teachers Honored with DiscoverE Educator Awards Steve Meyer Earlier this month, the National Engineers Week Foundation honored three pre-college educators for their high-spirited efforts to introduce young people to engineering concepts. The teachers - Steve Meyer of Brillion, Wis., Nicole Penn of Greensboro, N.C., and Anthony Williams of Omaha, Neb. - were named as the winners of the 2013 DiscoverE Educator Recognition Awards, while eight other top teachers were named runners-up in this years program. The DiscoverE Educator Awards program, which highlights grade 6-12 teachers who inspire their students to pursue career paths in engineering, was created by ASME and launched last year when the Society was co-chair of Engineers Week. The three winners each received a $2,000 cash prize, a 3M digital projector, and a 3M gift pack of classroom supplies. The prize also included a trip to Washington, D.C., where the winners were honored at a ceremony at the National Museum of the American Indian. The eight runners up received $500 apiece, as well as a 3M Shoot n Share camera and a 3M gift pack. Nicole Penn One of this years three winners, Steve Meyer of Brillion High School, has established a manufacturing engineering curriculum in his school, brings in speakers, arranges industry tours and internships, co-sponsors a STEM club, and supports vehicle and invention competitions. He also has helped unite his school to the business community through the addition of a new $1.5 million technology and engineering education center. Each year he organizes more than 50 tours for other schools, school boards, administrators and industry leaders to visit the program, create partnerships, and develop their own technology and engineering programs. This fall, he will begin training elementary school teachers to teach the Engineering is Elementary hands-on curriculum that was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston. A second 2013 DiscoverE Educator Award winner, Nicole Penn from Kiser Middle School, runs a STEM-based afterschool club where students participate in a variety of engineering and technology competitions and activities. She also makes a point of passing on her knowledge of robust, hands-on STEM activities with fellow educators through workshops and summer programs. Penn said she wants to encourage students in grades 6-8 to discover engineering because she would like them to be exposed to skills such as teaming, problem-solving, and research that transcend almost any career. Anthony Williams Anthony Williams, the third of this years award recipients, dropped out of college before eventually returning to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned a bachelors and a masters degree in industrial and manufacturing systems engineering. As a requirement of a National Science Foundation Fellowship he received as a doctoral student at the University of Central Florida, Williams began working with middle school teachers in integrated science and noticed the potential impact these educators had on young people. In addition to teaching engineering, math and science classes for grades 9-12, Williams chartered a National Society of Black Engineers junior chapter three years ago. The eight runners-up in the 2013 DiscoverE Educator Awards program are Holly Erickson of the STEM Center in Fargo, N.D.; Brian Gill of Lone Oak High School in Paducah, Ky., John Hammons from York High School in Yorktown, Va.; Gabriela Jaramillo Cordero of Liceo Nocturno de Nicoya and Colegio Tecnico Profesional de Corralillo in Guanacaste, Costa Rica; Branson Lawrence of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Ill.; Mary Morgan from Derby High School in Derby, Kan.; Kathleen Walsh of the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in Bryn Mawr, Pa.; and Mark Westlake, from Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, Minn. Teachers can be nominated for a DiscoverE Educator Award by either engineers or engineering students. Winners were selected by the National Engineers Week Foundation and its non-profit partners. Funding for the program is provided by ASME, the American Society of Civil Engineers, Bechtel, ExxonMobil and 3M. How to Get a Job at a Startup
How to Get a Job at a Startup How to Get a Job at a Startup Working for a startup can be an excellent career move. Youâll be working on a new and exciting product or service, youâll have the opportunity to grow with the company, and you may have the option to earn equity in the organization as well as a paycheck. What Employers Look For When you go to work for a startup, youâll be expected to start the job at full performance speed on day one. Companies look to hire people who are intrinsically motivated and have a track record of being able to learn things on their own time. You need to be self-motivated because a startup will not have the processes setup that a large company has. There may not be a human resources manager to onboard you or a manager telling you exactly what to do. Candidates also need to be team oriented, but be able to work on their own when they need to. Learning marketing or a new programming language, for example, will be a signal that you meet that criteria. Share the skills you have developed with the hiring manager at interviews. Startup Salary Information Startup compensation can be comprised of several components. You may be paid a straight salary, or there may be an equity component of your compensation in addition to your paycheck. To get an idea of potential compensation, use Angelâs Startup Salary and Equity Tool to get a sense of what you can earn. Select a role, location, skill, or market to view salaries and equity information for thousands of startups. Work/Life Balance When it comes to balancing your career and your life, donât expect 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. hours and every evening and weekend off, but you may be able to work a flexible schedule from home, the perks may be incredible, and youâll have the opportunity to grow with the company. Where to Find Startup Jobs Use Job Sites: AngelList is the best source for startup jobs. You can apply directly for over 74,000 jobs with one application. Youâll also be able to view salary and equity details for each employer. When you register on the site, youâll create a profile with your work experience and skills. You can share your profile publicly or keep it secret if you want to job search privately. Also search GitHub Jobs by title, location, company, and benefits. If youâre looking to partner and get in on the ground floor, CoFoundersLab is a site where potential entrepreneurs look for co-founders. Search Indeed and the other top job sites using âstartupâ as a keyword. If you have a location where youâd like to work, or if you are seeking a remote position, add those terms to your query. Youâll get a list of opportunities to explore. Reach Out to Companies Directly: Review lists of the best startups to find companies that match your skill set and interests. Many startups are small, and it may only take an email or LinkedIn to get connected to a decision maker. Writing a cold contact cover letter is a good way to get your credentials noticed.Use Your Networking Connections: One of the best ways to find a job at a startup is through networking. Who do you know? Search Crunchbase by person (and company) to find out what organizations your connections are affiliated with. You can also search by school to see which founders are alumni of your college. Also, check to see if your career services office can connect you to alumni at companies of interest. Browse your LinkedIn connections as well. Meetup With Startups: Learning what businesses operate out of your local coworking spaces can be a good way to identify startups in your area. Attend as many tech conferences and events as you have time for. Youâll be able to meet prospective employers in a group or one-on-one environment to learn about opportunities. Many tech employers participate in job fairs. Attend as many as you can, and note that a startup job fair may have a different format than a traditional career fair.Tap Social Media: Follow companies of interest on all their social media channels. You might line up your next job by reading a tweet or a LinkedIn post mention that the company is hiring. Respond right away, and you may be able to fast track the hiring process. Check Out the Company Some companies are better than others to work for, so spend time researching reviews of the workplace environment at startups. In some cases, even new companies have reviews on Glassdoor. Do your due diligence and look up the founders to see what other startups theyve been involved with in the past and if there are any reports on what its like to work for them. This can be a good indication of what you can expect if you take a job with them. Get Ready to Interview The hiring process may be a quick one, with fewer formalities than if you were interviewing with a traditional corporate employer. Be prepared for a phone interview, a video call, or an informal meeting on short notice. Startup interview attire is typically more casual than what youâd wear to a formal job interview, but you should still look polished and professional. As with any job interview, take the time to follow up with a thank-you note or email. Tips for Evaluating a Job Offer When you get a job offer, itâs important to carefully evaluate the compensation package. In addition to reviewing the salary and benefits, itâs important to understand how the equity package works. Understanding how options work and how they are taxed is important because it can be a surprise when the time comes to actually exercise the options. The check may be less than you expect, and you may not have realized that you have to shell out money to purchase the shares. One simple way to look at it is to consider the equity portion of the compensation as 0. Unless the startup up is highly successful, the chances are that you wonât see anything from those options. So, if you are treating them as 0, and you are most likely going to make less on the salary side, you need to consider the other benefits before you accept. Are you working in an up and coming field that will help your career (AI, self driving cars, blockchain, etc.)? Will you be in a position to learn valuable and marketable skills? Can you parlay this position into bigger things in the future? Have the founders started a startup before, and can you hitch your cart to them at some future point in your career? Are you thinking of becoming an entrepreneur and want to gain skills to run your own business? Consider all the factors that will make this the next best step in your career when making a decision, remembering that your tenure at a tech company doesnât have to be forever. Even if this is one of the startups that doesnât make it long-term, youâll have an opportunity to expand your skill set, build your resume, and acquire valuable professional experience in the tech industry.

5 Ways to Write a Great Resume Even If You#8217;re Struggling
5 Ways to Write a Great Resume â" Even If You#8217;re Struggling 5 Ways to Write a Great Resume â" Even If Youre Struggling You already know an amazing resume is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal when you are on the hunt for a new job. In fact, your resume may be more important than ever. The average corporate job attracts 250 resumes. Your resume needs to be really strong to stand out in such a densely populated field! Its likely that you want to succeed in writing a great resume â" but you may not be sure of where to start. Pulling together everything youve done into one document can be challenging. You want to be sure to put in the necessary time to make this successful, and that starts with breaking down your previous work experience. But what if youve forgotten your work responsibilities from a previous job? How can you possibly write a great resume if youre fuzzy on the details? This happens to more people than you might realize â" and it may happen to you, if it hasnt already. It may be that its been a long time since you were in that job. It may be that you werent there for very long, and so the actual responsibilities escape you. It may just be that you did so much you cant remember all the high points, so getting it all onto paper is tough. You have a general awareness of what you did while in this job, but youre having a tough time getting this into bullet-point form. No matter what the reason for your inability to remember your responsibilities or accomplishments, there are some helpful ways to work through this issue. The bottom line is that you want to generate a few major bullet points that showcase your experience, leadership, and aptitude, and then add some substance to them. If youre having trouble recalling all of your duties and accomplishments from a previous job, youll have to jog your memory a bit. If you utilize the right sources, this should be a breeze. Here are five ways to uncover any responsibilities or achievements that elude you and use them to build a resume that is sure to impress: 1. Contact a Former Coworker I once dealt with a candidate who was part of an entire sales and acquisition team that was laid off from a now bankrupt financial firm. The candidate showed a great deal of determination by organizing a resume brainstorming session over coffee with their former colleagues. With the help of the group, each member of the team was able to flesh out their resume with impressive responsibilities and achievements that they would have forgotten otherwise. So, if youre having trouble with your resume, reach out to a former coworker. Chances are, they may be able to help you remember some of your more impactful moments â" and you can help them remember some of theirs, too. Former colleagues can be valuable not only as references, but also as sources of information. They can remind you of what you did each day or how you added to the team. This is the kind of information youll need to write a winning resume. 2. Use a Resume-Builder There are so many great apps and websites out there into which you can plug your job title and start to build your experience from there. These platforms tend to speak in generalities, but they can serve as excellent starting points. Simply enter your experience and background as best you can remember, and then let the resume-builder populate your resume with suggestions. The resume-builders suggestions may spark some memories for you, and you can build a powerful resume from there. Often, these types of websites and apps will have consultants on staff that can help guide you through your resume. Consider conferring with them if youre really having trouble. 3. Look at Your Old Job Description If you cant access a copy of your exact job description, you can still look through descriptions of similar roles. You are likely to find something similar to your previous role on a job board somewhere, such as on this very website. This act of revisiting job descriptions may help you recall what you did on the job. Of course, you dont want to simply copy out the description word for word on your resume. Be sure to do a little customizing. Make it your own! You could even go one step further and call up the hiring managers of these job descriptions to inquire more about what each role entails. You never know what you may find out! 4. Do Some Research Within Your Industry for Helpful Tips Every field has some sort of industry group, website, or forum that you could tap into. It doesnt matter if youre in advertising or engineering â" you can likely locate something online that lists the typical responsibilities of your job. 5. Hire a Writer to Help You Bring Your Ideas to Life Perhaps your problem isnt that youre struggling to identify the meaningful responsibilities and achievements of your role. Maybe you have an idea about what you did, but youre simply struggling with putting it all into words. If thats the case, you may want to hire a resume writer to help you capture your role accurately. They can turn your accomplishments into powerful bullet points that speak to your effectiveness and success. â" Having trouble recalling your responsibilities and accomplishments is much more common than you might think. If youre struggling with your resumes, these tips should help get you headed in the right direction. Your resume is your most important tool in getting a job. Be sure that you spend time on creating bullet points that speak of your previous accomplishments â" and use these resources to jog your memory and make sure that youre not leaving out any important details.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. High Fashion Gets HighTech
High Fashion Gets HighTech High Fashion Gets HighTech Technology is taking over and fashion is certainly no exception. Wearable technology can be found in everything from wristbands that monitor health to computing glasses to shoes that double as a vacuum cleaner. Designers are finding more and more ways to incorporate technology into clothing, and even evening wear is getting revamped. CuteCircuit Take, for example, CuteCircuit, a fashion house in London that has been experimenting with wearable technologies since their launch in 2004. All of their designs aim to express emotion and interaction with others through their clothing, according to Creative Director Francesca Rosella. They design all aspects of their garments, especially their signature colorful, butterfly circuits, in-house and then get them manufactured. The M Dress. Image: CuteCircuit The Mobile Phone Dress When designing the M Dress, Rosella had two major problems in mind. She hated having to take a small purse just for her cellphone during a night out and kept missing calls because her phone was away in that purse. The solution? Create a dress that has your cellphone built into it. Made of silk jersey, the M-Dress can connect to any phone with a removable SIM card. The SIM card is inserted into a slot hidden under the label of the dress. This allows the wearer to use the same phone number as their regular cellphone. The long-sleeved dress has a microphone, speaker, and sensor that detects hand motions built into the sleeves. To answer a call, wearers simply bring their hand up to their ear. Releasing their hand downwards will hang up the call. This gesture recognition software allows the dress to work in an intuitive, comfortable way. To prevent answering unwanted calls by motions such as dancing or scratching your head, the embedded software calculates a specific speed and hand motion that was tested as typical of answering calls. The thing that is very nice is that we used a Quad Band module to make the dress work and you can get your phone calls from all over the world, says Rosella. The dress has tiny circuits that are connected with nylon fibers coated in copper. Theyre very soft but at the same time they conduct electricity, she says. And, just like your cellphone, if you want to turn it off, you just hold down the power button. Daredroid 2.0 Waiting by the bar for a drink might just become a thing of the past. The DareDroid 2.0 is a cocktail dress that actually makes cocktails. You just have to play a game of Truth or Dare first. The Climate Dress. Image: Diffus Design This robot dress is made up of an electronic control system and a liquid-dispensing system. An infrared range sensor measures the proximity of people to the wearer of the dress. Once a person is detected, the dress can dispense a non-alcoholic drink. If a person gets too close to the wearer, invading the wearers personal space, the dress shuts down. To actually obtain an alcoholic drink, a game of Truth or Dare operated by a smart phone must be played. There is no electronic connection between the phone and the rest of the dress, so the decision to pour a drink has to be made by a human based on the Truth or Dare performance, says Marius Kintel, the software engineer behind the dress. The control system consists of infrared range sensors, pushbuttons to activate dispensing, and LEDs that visually show a persons proximity to the wearer. The system is controlled by an embedded microcontroller. We developed the software ourselves. Its written in C$ and runs on the Arduino platform which is embedded into the back piece, says Kintel. Liquid is stored inside elastomeric pumps that pressurize hoses to transport liquid. Dispensing is performed using solenoid valves. We used pneumatic control valves from Festo, due to their small size and low power requirements. These valves are designed for dried air, not liquids, but our tests showed that its possible to use them for liquids over short periods of time. Eventually, they rust, says Kintel. The concept behind Daredroid 2.0, an international collaboration between Anouk Wipprecht, a fashion designer, Jane Tingley, an artist, and Kintel, aims to break social norms and explore public behavior. The Smoke Dress. Image: Robert Lunak The Smoke Dress Ever wish you could just disappear out of an uncomfortable conversation? The Smoke Dress is no invisibility cloak, but it will deploy a smoke screen around you when the situation calls for it. Using a battery-operated fog machine that vaporizes glycol developed by Look Solutions and an Arduino microprocessor, the wearer can control the smoke with the touch of a button. To cool down the smoke but not condense too much of it, designers Wipprecht and Aduen Darriba incorporated a Peltier element to cool down the air quickly. The fog machine starts vaporizing the glycol. This process demands the attraction of air. The air that is attracted is pulled through a Peltier cooling element, and the cool air is used to make fog, says Darriba. The fog is fed through tubing around the body and is extruded around the shoulder or waist area. The Climate Dress If youre curious how much carbon dioxide is in the air around you, this dress will show you. Created by Diffus Design, the Climate Dress is made of conductive embroidery, hundreds of LED lights, a CO2 sensor, and an Arduino Lilypad microprocessor. The sensor detects CO2 levels in the air and transmits this data to the LED lights which visualize the level of CO2 in the nearby surroundings and are powered through the embroidery, according to concept designer Michel Guglielmi, who collaborated with RD electrical engineers Jesper Nielsen and Jerker Hammarbeg. The embroidery becomes functional, conveying electricity and computer information and thereby gives power to the dress. Diverse light patterns are transmitted through the dress after CO2 levels are sensed. These patterns can vary from slow, regular light pulsations to short and hectic, Guglielmi says. Guglielmi and his collaborators, including digital artist Hanne Johannesen, decided to use a CO2 sensor to connect an individual with their environment through clothing. Wearables morphing into street fashion is here to stay because computing technology is now becoming ubiquitous, says Guglielmi. The level of miniaturization and sophistication of technologies makes them unavoidable to any garment in the years to come. Ariana Marini is an independent writer.
